Tableau is the more popular data visualization tool used for extensive data analysis. This was founded in 2003, later acquired by Salesforce in 2019. It can be used to convert unstructured data into useful information for the business. Moreover, this data interpretation can be easily understood by non-technical persons like people from sales and marketing. This information can be used by companies to understand the various market trends and take necessary corrective actions.

Tableau’s significant demand in different industries has given rise to an increase in job opportunities for developers. Here, I am to help you prepare interviews to grab a job in this field.

Q 1- What is meant by Tableau?

It is a smart software used by various businesses to analyze raw data in the form of images, videos, and so on. The information collected is then transformed into meaningful data in a visual format like dashboards for easy understanding. It is also used to present the changes and density of this data in form of graphs. Using this system, we can easily blend and collaborate this real-time data for uniqueness.

Q 2– State the different data types supported in Tableau?

Tableau can support strings, date, time, number, Boolean and geographical values.

The data type of a field can be changed using Data pane/Data Source.

Q 3- Differentiate between the traditional tools used for Business Intelligence and Tableau.

  Tableau:

  •   The architecture has no dependency on hardware.

  •   It is based on associative search which makes it faster.

  •   It supports advanced technologies like multi-threading, in-built memory, and so on.

Q 4- What are the different products offered by Tableau? Also, state the latest version.

  1. Tableau Desktop can be used to transform images into efficient queries. You can the form establish a connection between your desktop and data warehouse for analysis of data. It can be used to produce a dashboard.
  2. Tableau Server can be used to share the dashboard generated by Tableau desktop over the web. It will give quick access to published content.
  3. Tableau Online is a system that is deployed in a cloud environment. You can easily access the published dashboards using a mobile app or browser. There is not required to set up the hardware.
  4. Tableau Reader is used to only read the files in Tableau. You cannot edit any dashboard created by Tableau. 
  5. Tableau Public is a free version of Tableau. You can create your dashboard and other visualizations but can’t save them on your local machine.

Tableau 2020.3.1 is the latest version released on 30th September 2020.

Q 5- Differentiate between Measures and Dimensions.

Measures:

  •   It is related to numbers and quantities of data like Profit, Loss, and so on. 

  •   It can be collected.

  •   It contains a foreign key, which refers to the corresponding dimension, ion table.

Dimensions:

  • It is related to the qualities of data like name, geographical information, date, etc.

  • It is used to classify, divide, and disclose the data.

  • It has a reference to the measures table.

Q 6- What is the maximum size of the file allowed in Tableau?

There is no maximum size limit for files in Tableau.

Q 7- What are the different file extensions available with Tableau?

.twb(Tableau Workbook), .twbx(Tableau Packaged Workbook), .tde(Tableau Data Extract), .tbm(Tableau Bookmark, .tds(Tableau Data Source), .tms(Tableau Map Source), .tdsx(Tableau Packaged Data Source), .tps(Tableau Preferences) are the different file extensions in Tableau.

Q 8- Differentiate between .twb and .twbx extensions.

  .twb:

  •   It is an XML file

  •   It contains all selection and layout that has been used in the workbook of Tableau

  •   It contains no data

.twbx:

  • It is a zipped file

  • It includes a .twb file along with some other files like images of the background, and so on.

  • It only contains other files

Q 9- What is meant by a filter and state the different types of filters used in Tableau?

A filter is a mechanism by which we can prevent unwanted data from appearing in Tableau’s workbook and dashboard.

The different types of filters are Context, Data Source, and Extract filters. It also has a filter on Measure, Dimension, and Table Calculations.

Q 10- What is the Level Of Detailed Expression?

It is used whenever we want to run complicated queries related to several dimensions where data is sourced.

 Inner Join, Full Outer Join, Left, and Right Outer Join are the different joins available.

Q 17- The maximum number of tables that able to be joined using Tableau?

Thirty-two tables can be joined at the most in Tableau.

Q 18- What is the use of Data Modelling?

It is the initial stage of Object-oriented programming. It is used to analyze the data and identify the relationship between objects of data.

Q 19- How can you improve the performance of Tableau?

Workbooks can work faster with the use of Extracts. The data considered for analysis can be reduced. You can use fewer marks on views so that information is not overloaded. You can hide unnecessary, unused fields and use context filters. You may use indexing, and unwanted calculations can be removed from the sheet.

Q 20- What is meant by shelves in Tableau?

It is the labeled area to the left and top of the window in Tableaus like Page Shelf, Filter Shelf, Mark Shelf, Row, and Column Shelf.

It is used to receive responses quickly, improve performance, and collaborated with the existing data system. The data is stored in disks during imports, so RAM is not used often. It speeds up the entire process.

Q 30- What is Data Server in Tableau?

It is a link between users in Tableau and data. It will permit you to load and share data. It saves the data connections, calculations, and field metadata can be reused using them. 

Q 31- How to install Tableau Public?

  1. Go to https://public.tableau.com/s/ website to download for Windows or Mac Desktop.
  2.  Enter the email id. Enter the same.
  3. Then click on Download App.
  4. The file is downloaded in your download folder set for the browser.
  5. Double click the file and follow the instructions to install.
  6. Once done, a desktop icon will be created.

Q 32- State the difference between the Tiled and Floating layout.

Tiled layout: In this type of design, the items will not overlap with each other. It always according to the size of the dashboard.

Floating layout: The items may overlap with each other in case of space shortage. The items can have a fixed position, unlike Tiled Layout.

Q 33- What is meant by VIZQL in Tableau?

VIZQL stands for Visual Inquiry Language. It is like the SQL language. However, unlike querying data in SQL, it is used to convert data queries into images.

Q 34- What is the meaning of aggregation and disaggregation of data in Tableau?

Aggregation means to produce a summary of data and viewing a single number—for example, the count of students in a class.

Disaggregation means viewing all transactions used to analyze all measures dependent or independent of each other—for example, the salary of each employee.

Q 35- What are the components of a dashboard?

  • Web: It includes the web page, which is seen on the dashboard.
  • Vertical component: It is a container in a vertical layout where you can add the desired objects.
  • Horizontal component: It is a container in a horizontal layout where you can add the selected items.
  • Text: it is the region where you can write and edit the desired text.
  • Image Extract: Here, you can upload an image from the computer to the dashboard.

For a start: Go to the Help tab, click Settings and Performance, Start Performance Recording.

Q 39- Can we give as many parameters as we want in Tableau?

No, Parameters can be represented in four ways. It doesn’t allow passing more than one value in parameters.

Q 40- What are some factors that are the reason for low performance in Tableau?

Filter creation needs an additional query. So if you have more filters used inefficiently can drastically affect the performance.

If an incorrect data source triggers a query for data, it will reduce the performance.

Yes, we can easily download any workbook or view from the server. But the format in which they can be downloaded depends on the permissions given by admin or owners of the content.

It can be downloaded as .png or .csv file. A.pdf file format can be used while downloading, but the web page’s objects are not included.

Q 44- Can we use some columns which are a part of the data source, but not included in Reports?

Yes, it is allowed. At times we use some columns in reports and some columns only as a filter.

Q 45- What is the advantage of using Tableau extract?

Tableau extract can be built and used without connecting to the database.

Q 46- Can MS Excel files be placed in a shared location and used to create reports?

Yes, but it would be better to extract a file for better performance.

Q 47- How can testing be done in Tableau?

We can use the Tableau Desktop application for testing.

Q 48- Design a view that will show the population of different sex of each city in a particular state.

  1. The desired data must be present on the same sheet.
  2. Double click on the field for State. Drag the desired city to the desired State field.
  3. Drag no of males into the size field.
  4. Drag no of females into the color field.
  5. Click on the size field and increase it to 80%
  6. Right-click State field, and click Show Filter.
  7. Select Males and Females.

Now you will be able to view Size as Males and Color as Females for each State.

Q 49- Can we protect data in Tableau public?

No, we cannot protect the data in Tableau public. Anyone can access this data.

Q 50- Can relational joins be created without creating a new table?

Yes, we can quickly create relational joins.
